Benefits of Low Carb Diet During Aging
As we get older, our bodies process nutrients differently. One of the biggest changes is in glucose (sugar) metabolism. Many of the foods we eat, especially desserts, are full of carbohydrates that raise blood sugar. Unfortunately, large swings in blood sugar increase risk for type 2 diabetes, promote weight gain, and can leave you feeling sluggish.
A low carb diet is a great, healthy option as we age. Low carb foods tend to have more protein and healthy fats. These nutrients make you feel fuller longer, meaning you won’t constantly be craving more sugary snacks. Not only does this help with cravings, but it also regulates your blood sugar and helps you maintain a healthy body weight. The good news is that when you crave a fudgy brownie, there are low carb alternatives that will fulfill your chocolate craving without causing ill effects for your health.
Nutrition Benefits of Sweet Potato Brownie Ingredients
These sweet potato brownies are chock full of nutrients. Each of the main ingredients in this low carb brownie recipe is a nutritional powerhouse:
Sweet Potatoes
Sweet potatoes are a great source of fiber and complex carbohydrates. Sweet potatoes are an exceptional source of beta carotene, which is converted to vitamin A in your body. Beta carotene supports vision. Plus, sweet potatoes contain a range of antioxidants that combat age-related damage to your cells. Sweet potatoes also give this recipe a fudgy brownie texture.
Honey
Honey is an all-natural way to sweeten desserts like these easy low carb brownies. Honey contains polyphenols, a type of antioxidants that protect heart health and may prevent a rise in your blood sugar.
Coconut Oil
Coconut oil contains medium-chain triglycerides, a type of healthy fat that has been associated with greater calorie burning. This means that coconut oil can help you achieve your weight loss goals. Coconut oil is also full of antioxidants to support your cellular health.
Almond Flour
Unlike the bleached white flour found in many desserts, this recipe calls for almond flour. Almond flour is high in fiber and healthy fats. As a low carb alternative to wheat flours, almond flour won’t raise your blood sugar or cause a “sugar crash” a few hours after eating. Almond flour is also an exceptional source of vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant. Making brownies with almond flour also provides your body with magnesium, which helps to regulate your blood sugar and blood pressure.

Bake for 28-30 minutes or until the center is set. Check doneness by inserting a toothpick, which should come out clean.
Let fully cool in the pan before slicing and serving.
Modifications
This recipe is very robust to substitutes. For a vegan alternative, swap eggs for egg substitute powder or ground flax. In lieu of almond flour, swap any kind of oat flour, cassava flour, or coconut flour.
